New paintings, hot off the easel, and some thoughts on art and life ...

New Painting - "Wild Roses"

Wow - I've been neglecting this blog!  But I've still been painting and here is one of my small daily works.  It's currently in auction at Daily Paintworks, where I sell my smallest works.

I love painting this rose, which isn't actually wild.  The variety is called "Eyepaint" and it has the charm of wild roses with only a single set of petals contrasted against a center "eye."  The graceful little vase came from my painting student who brought it for a still life set up (thank you Rohini!).

I worked on a toned canvas, which made the painting finish more quickly. It's such a simple trick but often useful.  In this case I took leftover paint scraped off the palette at the end of a painting session and spread it on a small Gessobord panel.  That way I didn't waste the paint, and when the panel was dry I had a headstart on my next painting.
