New paintings, hot off the easel, and some thoughts on art and life ...

Write in Pajamas, Paint in Slippers

Art and writing tend to be low paying jobs, but they do have the advantage of a lax dress code.  When you work at home, creating stuff, who cares what you're wearing?

I thought about this when a new student was scheduled to come to my home studio for her first painting lesson.  My husband and I were standing in the kitchen that morning, and as I looked down at my feet I said "Guess I'd better change out of slippers today so I can make a good impression, huh?"  But a second later I thought, "Why?"  Shouldn't a new art student learn about one of the features of the job?

I'm a writer and a painter, and I tend to do my writing early in the morning.  I'm still in robe and slippers most of the time.  Later I exercise, get dressed and start painting, but since I have a no-shoes-in-the-house habit, I keep my slippers on. I used to get dressed up to go to work, and I kind of miss it because I love clothes.  But I LOVE doing exactly what I want to do every day, which is what I get to do as an independent artist and writer.  And what I want to do most days is write in pajamas, paint in slippers.

P. S. - The painting above is part of my "year in the garden" project, and it's called 'Mermaid' Rose.

P.P.S. - My middle grade adventure novel is called Ben Franklin Is An Alien, and it's available on Amazon.
