New paintings, hot off the easel, and some thoughts on art and life ...

New Painting: An Artist's Year In The Garden

I just ended the third month in my goal to paint flowers from my garden every weekday for a year. One of my recent favorites is this piece, White Primroses. I think of it as part of a set. I painted "Red Primroses" first, but I had several colors of these flowers in the garden, so I decided to paint two more in the same size. Here's how they look together. They're unframed at the moment, but you get the idea. More of my flower paintings are here on my website.

I've done sets of paintings before. The three still life paintings "Morning," "Afternoon" and "Late Night" were created to be a series. These three have a suggestion of story in them and I may expand on that idea in a new set of paintings. Right now I'm having fun painting flowers, but I do like story paintings (like "Centered" and "Blue in the Pink Kitchen"), and I think I'll be getting back to that kind of work this year.

Hi Julia,
I love your primroses. Very pretty and primrosey!
You are very talented!

Thanks, Wendy! It's still chilly here and not many things are blooming so I'm making the most of these. Primroses, cymbidium, one hellebore and some baby blue eyes are all I have this week. Next week I may add in the first sweet peas and tulips. But it's summer for you, right?

Yes it is summer here, but there is a bit of a lull with some of the flowers in my garden at the moment. Probably due to things getting a little parched. Although the bougainvillea, hibiscus and plumbago are all a riot of colour.
I envy you the appearance of sweet peas. They are some of my all time favourites. Their scent makes me weak at the knees!
Will check in again soon to see what you are painting!
Wendy
