New paintings, hot off the easel, and some thoughts on art and life ...

30 in 30 Painting Challenge

Today's painting is finished on my first day of Leslie Saeta's  30 in 30 painting challenge.  OK, actually I only committed to 20 in 30, but it's still called the 30 in 30 challenge. Lots of artists are joining, so it should be fun. I'm reducing the prices of paintings I finish during this challenge, and I'll be donating 15% of my website sale proceeds to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.

I'll be painting whatever's blooming in my garden, and today it was 'Betty Prior' roses. But I changed their color to be a light pinkish lavender. Did you know that viridian and quinacridone red and white make beautiful lavenders? I learned that when I made color charts (bless you, Richard Schmid for stressing color charts in your book and for showing us an easy way to make them!). The photo below shows my set up with the real roses. I made a thumbnail value sketch first; a corner of it is visible in the photo.

Happy Painting Everyone!

Hi Julia, I'm impressed to see that you have continued with your flower painting project during the year. I love your roses - very pretty!
Good luck with the challenge.
Are you still writing in the afternoons?
Thanks for visiting my blog!

Hi Wendy!
Well, no ... I don't write much in the afternoons because I now have a part-time job. But yes, I've kept up my painting project. I finish on Nov. 1 of this year. I haven't been able to FINISH a painting every weekday, but I've STARTED five paintings a week (most weeks). I hope to go back and finish many of the unfinished ones. A few were real turkeys, those I'll never post!
Julia
